Aileen Lee

Nobody will be able to tell Scott Weaver that he is not patient, nor creative! In 1977, he discovered the joy of making small toothpick sculptures with Elmer’s glue. His passion lead him to create a small replica of the Golden Gate Bridge.

For the past 35 years, the Rohnert Park resident devoted all his spare time to build a small San Francisco. It required him more than 30,000 hours to build the work-of-art tall of 9 feet. He has been offered $40,000 for his masterpiece that has required more than 100,000 toothpicks. His answer?

He declined to sell it. “Other than my wife and my son, this is the most important thing in my life,” he says.

Dites fromage! / Say Cheese!

They bought organic milk from the neighbor and before long the world found them. From the beginning, they wanted to make delicious, artisan cheese and to be environmentally responsible.

These days, Cowgirl Creamery continues to make just a small collection of cheese, four different kinds. The company produces 3,000 pounds per week. Their cheese is being distributed throughout United States and Europe.

Journée artistique / Artistic Day

-------------------------------------

A new fashion rage is going on in California and most of its fans are teenagers. Popular because of the singer Lady Gaga and the Japanese anime characters, the circular contact lenses are the new “in” item.

The lenses, sold without prescription, represent a health hazard according to doctors:

"Often sold as one-size-fits-all, with no exam or prescription required, circle lenses are contacts with a tinted outer ring overlapping the white of the eye, making the iris, or colored part of the eye, appear bigger. They come in a variety of colors and usually cost $20 to $30 a pair."

Is it really worth it to look cool?

Second souffle à l’économie / Second breath for the economy

A small town near Yosemite, North Fork, decided to help the local economy by having is own local currency. Even though some people love the idea, others tend to prefer to stick with green money.

In the past, other communities developed the same idea and it ended up being a big success. Such as the city of Ithaca, in upstate New York, that created more than 100K in local currency.

With only a few hundreds of dollars in circulation in the town of North Fork, they are only at their beginning. A business man, Josh Freeman, has its word to say about the initiative of this local currency.

"In a small town, you tend to look out for each other," he said. "With the changes in economy, the more we support each other in positive ways, the better the quality of life is for everyone."

Half Dome

My new Passion!

Le prof, Jan, enseigne au magasin “Yarns by the Sea”.

---------------------------------------

Everything started out of my daughter Savannah’s request. For two months, she begged me to register her in a knitting class. Knowing her well, I knew that her new interest wouldn’t last very long.

So, being a good mom, I also registered to the class. The teacher, Jan, teaches at the “Yarns by the Sea” store. I started in mid-December with boring projects (make different knitting patches) and finally, two weeks ago, Jan taught me how to do a scarf.

Finally, I finished it two days ago and here are the photos of my first project. I received many compliments for the scarf and I even got a request to knit a scarf.

Wow, is it my brand new career?

What would be forced to eat if you didn’t listen to the authorities? Maybe you think of a dry piece of bread along with a glass of water? In the California prison system, if an inmate doesn’t listen, he will be served some disciplinary diet loaf? But what is that bread exactly?

This loaf is tasteless and the inmate who is stuck with this diet will tend to being disciplined much quicker. In some States, such as New York, Massachusetts, and Minnesota, food punishment is forbidden. If you ever have to punish someone and have to feed this person, here is the famous disciplinary diet loaf recipe:

2.5
ounces nonfat dry milk
4.5
ounces raw grated potato
4.5
ounces raw carrots, chopped or grated fine
1.5
ounces tomato juice or puree
4.5
ounces raw cabbage, chopped fine
7 ounces lean ground beef, turkey or re-hydrated, canned or frozen Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP)
2.5
fluid ounces oil
1.5
ounces whole wheat flour
¼ teaspoon salt
4 teaspoon raw onion, chopped
1 egg
6 ounces dry red beans, pre-cooked before baking (or 16 ounces canned or cooked red kidney beans)
4 teaspoon chili powder

Shape into a loaf and bake at 350-375 degrees for 50-70 minutes.

Bon appetit!

Une bague par jour! / A Ring a Day!

While I was recently Christmas shopping at an artist’s studio, I saw an interesting ring display. There were traditional rings but also some that were unusual looking.

This artist had taken part to an annual event that consisted to create one ring a day for 365 days. The group, “Ring a Day”, has a Flickr site where the artistic community is displaying numerous ring pictures.

I am inviting you to see how clever and creative they ended up being to create so many rings and never run out of inspiration! And many of those rings are for sale, if you still have a budget to get a small gift after this holiday season.
