Les enfants invisibles / The invisible children

They are Los Angeles residents but usually we prefer to forget them. They often feel rejected and have been kicked out of the house by their parents. They are amongst the 4200 persons under 25 that are homeless.

Among those, 40% identify themselves as gay, lesbian, bisexual or undecided regarding their sexual orientation. Five percent of the youth homeless said they are transgender.

All have a sad story: they come from a neglected family, a family not open about their child’s sexual orientation or a family that can feed another mouth.

Depression is present among those youths. Most of them would rather be invisible rather than admitting they live on the street.

--------------------------------------

There is not a day that when I go to Santa Cruz, I see these famous “bums” on street corners who beg for money. Usually, it is a badly dressed man with a kitty or little dog and holding in his hands a cardboard sign saying that he is a war veteran without a dime and all he wants is spare change to go back home to Kansas.

I always wondered why so many of those Kansas homeless ended up suddenly in Santa Cruz. The honesty of the displayed signs often leaves me in doubt. A website, http://www.holytaco.com/25-awsome-homeless-guy-signs, was created and collected photo of homeless people holding signs that are real honest (but sometimes their messages are quite racy).
And what about you? Would you give some spare changes to these guys?
