Santa Cruz a connu la plupart des immigrants Chinois qui travaillaient notamment dans le domaine de l’agriculture et de la pêche. Par contre, une profession chinoise de l’époque qui est souvent sous-estimé du public est le service de buanderie.
Le travail était souvent avec des horaires de 12 heures, 7 jours sur 7, dans des locaux ayant peu de ventilation. Contrairement à l’opinion populaire, il n’y avait pas de tradition qui amenait les Chinois dans ce type d’entreprise. Plus souvent qu’autrement, personne ne voulait faire ce genre de boulot ingrat. Dans les années 1880, on dénotait que la population de Santa Cruz était plus de 3.898 personnes. On dénotait également un ratio de une buanderie pour 389 personnes. Les buanderies chinoises de Santa Cruz avait la réputation de produire des vêtements propres et bien repassés.
C’est dire qu’on travaillait dur pour son argent dans le temps!

Santa Cruz has known the majority of the Chinese immigrants that worked in the agricultural or fishing business. However, a Chinese profession in the past that was often underestimated was the laundry business.
The work often involved heavy schedule of 12 hours, 7 days a week, in buildings with very little ventilation. In contrast to popular opinion, there was no tradition that brought Chinese into this business type. More often than never, nobody wanted to get into this harsh business. In the 1880s, we noticed the Santa Cruz population was 3,898 people. Also there was a ratio for every laundry for each 389 people. Santa Cruz Chinese laundry had a reputation for producing clean, well-ironed clothing.
In the old time, they were really working hard for their money!
