Bonne fête à moi! / Happy Birthday to myself!

-------------------------------------------------

On this March 26th, I am turning a page of my existence. I am now 44 and for many reasons, I always been in fear of this age. By intuition, if I can turn 45, I know I will be fine to live for another 40 years.

I think I just don't like the number "4" in general so by having a double combination of "4", I have the impression that it will bring me bad luck. In my subconscious, I always think of a beloved aunt who died at the young age of 44 of breast cancer, a few days after Christmas. Will I also die at the age of 44 because of the cancer? I hope my intuition is wrong, for once.

One thing is sure is that I will truly enjoy my day, today. I made the mistake to plan two meetings a few weeks ago and a third appointment earlier this weekend. I will have a few free hours this afternoon as well as tonight to do my favorite hobby: quilting. These days, I am working to finish one of my grandmother's unfinished quilt. It is a very emotional process for me because I want to do a stellar job. The other day, I showed all her unfinished quilts to a quilting expert group. I was so proud that day. Those ladies said that my grandmother was a fine quilter with a huge talent.

If I had to make a wish today, I would love to bring my grandmother alive for one hour to do quilting with me. I would also bring my grandfather. In exchange of some maple syrup mousse, I would ask him to built me a hand quilt frame. It would surely be a lovely gift. Because it is not possible, both of them will be in my thought.

But, one day, I know that will be able to spend all the time I want with them to do quilting and chatting. I won't have to make an unrealistic wish...

J’adore cela!!!

------------------------------

I should have called this blog: "The Wonderful World of a Broken Foot"! I am starting my fourth week with a broken foot and I find my days spreading too long… Well, I have to be patient and adapt my life according to that foot now. Yesterday morning, I started physical therapy and it is going well.

For those of you who never had a body part broken, I am introducing you to seven photos that reveals the numerous disadvantages and advantages to have this sort of injury.

Photo 1: The usual suspect: my broken foot with huge bruises on the toes. I have to massage my toes several times a day (hence, the reason for the oily foot aspect).

Photo 2: The infamous boot I have to wear during the day. I still can’t walk on my foot yet.

Photo 3: The night boot that I dearly hate.

Photo 4: The crutches that are a must for short-distance I need to cover.

Photo 5: The little scooter that is a wonder and the talk of the town when I head out with it. To do grocery with this is a great way to speed up a chore!

Photo 6: The chair to take my shower. A small reminder what it feels to be an old person. It is quite complicated to get on the chair without injuring more my foot but once there, with hot water flowing over my body, I don’t want to get out of the shower.

Photo 7: Ah, this is the best! I am now the favorite person in town to tag along. When I go shopping, I always have a spot by the door. I love it!

Tablier / Apron

-------------------------------

Last week, during my last sewing class, I was busy making a kitchen apron. I had some tension problems with my sewing machine so it took me forever to finish my project.

In a few days, I will start a quilting class. I can't wait to start this new hobby. It's been a very long time that I dream to create nice quilts.

Pooja Karkhanis

----------------------------------

On this Friday, I am introducing you to a young woman I hired as a designer and sewer last month, Pooja Karkhanis. Because I was invited to a graduation and wedding in the same month (June), I thought to spoil myself by having a handmade dress.

My basic idea was the famous Marilyn Monroe dress but with some adjustments. I didn’t want a white dress and because I don’t have a lot of breast, I went with something a little more basic on top. My designer, Pooja, has a fashion designer education and she even has her own lingerie collection. I was impressed by the quality of her work and I would recommend her to anyone. She has her studio in Cupertino, California.

See by yourself the fabulous result!

Jour de graduation / Graduation Day

--------------------------------------------------

Three years ago, I had the honor to graduate from San José State University with a BFA in Animation/Illustration with Honors. The same day, one of my good friends, Katie Greenleaf, told me she would be the next one to graduate. Well, yesterday, that day finally happened!

It was also the day to wear for the first time my handmade retro dress. Yeah! It was with a great pleasure that I attended the graduation of my friend, Katie, from the Lincoln Law School. Next August, it will be 12 years that we know each other. Since that day, she became a perseverance model to me. After having three children, she could have said I am done and just stay home. Well, no! She decided to get into Law school because she is dreaming to be a judge one day. Anyone who is married with kids could tell you it is very challenging to have a good balance between family life and school.

Her determination to follow her professional dream has inspired me to pursue my own dream to do a Master degree one day. Many challenges came up in my life for the past 5 years and many people abandoned me as a friend, but not Katie. She has always been a great support to me. To all of you who are reading this blog today, I wish you a friend like Katie. She is a priceless friend. I often thank God to have brought her in my life.

Once again, congratulation Katie for your Law Degree! Who knows! When “Judge Judy” from the famous American TV program will retire, maybe she will have a great replacement: Judge Katie!

-----------------------------------

In expectation to start soon my knitted cardigan, a big project that will keep me busy for many weeks, I made two small kitchen cloths this week. They have a frog pattern. This cotton yarn was on sale at Yarns by the Sea, where I take knitting classes, so I couldn't pass on the bargain.

I also spoiled myself by buying the patterns for the 6 main characters of my favorite claymation: Wallace and Grommit. So, stay tuned if you want to see the result!

Bonne fête Nathalie! / Happy Birthday Nathalie!

----------------------------

It is a big day today and fortunately this year, my birthday is falling on a Saturday! I know that I will spend two hours in my knitting class and will start a big project today: my first cardigan!

Besides this, there is not much planned! I am wishing myself a healthy year filled with happiness! It seems I have been sick for too long (5 years already) and a family and profesionnal hapiness wouldn't be too much to ask.

Happy birthday to myself!

---------------------------------------

A few days ago, I talked about my two first knitting projects I made since the beginning of my knitting class (last December). I also did another project between the scarf and the hat.

I have a really good friend who is originally from South Africa, Gerhard, who now lives in North Dakota. He lives in USA since two years to pay medical bills from a close family member affected by cancer. His story really touched my heart because we often think only doctors in USA rip off patients with expensive medical invoices.

Because he is sending the majority of his salary back home, he doesn’t survive on a whole lot of money and can’t afford to buy many warm clothes. Then, I got the idea to knit him a scarf! Because he loves the color blue, I started knitting away.

Winter is almost reaching its end in North Dakota but Gerhard will have some time to enjoy my scarf for the remaining time. And what is fun about this project is to know that in December, my scarf will head to South Africa because Gerhard will go back home to his family.

Tuque et foulard / Hat and Scarf

--------------------------------

Here it goes! I finished my kit hat and scarf! It took me forever to put the final touch to my hat because the instructions were a bit complex and I had to miss a few knitting classes on top of that.

But, now it is done! I finished the two pieces! Now, my dilemma is what will I do for my next project…

Goodbye Google

Aurevoir Google!

------------------------

It is with great sadness yesterday that I left my job at Google. I am leaving to be on disability and I can admit that it was a very tough decision to take. I worked in several companies throughout my life but it has been rare that I worked in a place with such kind and smart people.

By working in this corporation, I realized one of my biggest dreams. I hope this good luck will happen again in my life. I am leaving the workforce to come back in a few months stronger and healthier.

I will dearly miss everyone. Goodbye Google!

Ma nouvelle passion! / My new Passion!

Le prof, Jan, enseigne au magasin “Yarns by the Sea”.

---------------------------------------

Everything started out of my daughter Savannah’s request. For two months, she begged me to register her in a knitting class. Knowing her well, I knew that her new interest wouldn’t last very long.

So, being a good mom, I also registered to the class. The teacher, Jan, teaches at the “Yarns by the Sea” store. I started in mid-December with boring projects (make different knitting patches) and finally, two weeks ago, Jan taught me how to do a scarf.

Finally, I finished it two days ago and here are the photos of my first project. I received many compliments for the scarf and I even got a request to knit a scarf.

Wow, is it my brand new career?

Le sapin! / The Christmas Tree!

-----------------------------

While I still have energy yesterday afternoon, I decided to put up the Christmas tree with my children. It took a good 3 hours of our time. We took a few photos so you can also feel the Christmas spirit.

What do you think?

Notre nouvel escalier / Our new Stair

-------------------------------

For those who came to my house lately, you will agree that our stair started to show sign of aging. Some steps were not that sturdy and time and erosion started to creep in slowly on the stair.

So, in a joint decision, we decided to completely redo the stair as well as adding a new big deck. Our neighbor, Bob Berry, a talented carpenter, took care of this project from A to Z.

The photos below shows the process from beginning to end. We are very satisfied of our new remodeled stair.
