Les semaines se suivent et semblent se ressembler dans le comté de Santa Cruz. Ce matin, dans le journal local, la manchette du jour est… un incendie, encore une fois! Cette fois, ce n’est pas dans la forêt mais c’est un feu qui s’est déclaré dans un hôtel historique des montagnes de Santa Cruz.
Le Brookdale Lodge, qui compte un hôtel, restaurant, spa et un complexe appartement a été la proie des flammes. La devanture de l’hôtel, le restaurant ainsi que les chambres où les visiteurs pouvaient résider sont demeuré intact. L’hôtel date de 1890 et plusieurs personnalités y sont passé depuis son instauration tel que Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford et l’ancien président Herbert Hoover. Au fil des années, l’hôtel historique a passé entre plusieurs mains et en 2007, il a été acheté par Sanjiv Kakkar pour la somme de $5.3 millions.
La dernière fois que j’avais été dans le coin était pour déguster un délicieux brunch avec mon mari et les enfants. Le restaurant a comme particuliarité d’avoir un ruisseau qui passe au milieu du restaurant. C’est dans ce ruisseau que la nièce de l’un des propriétaires s’est noyée dans les années 50. On dit que son fantôme est toujours au Brookdale Lodge.
Nous nous étions promis d’y amener mes parents la prochaine fois qu’ils viendraient nous visiter en Californie. Trève de coïncidence, j’étais supposée aller à une session de dessin de modèle vivant hier soir, session qui se donnait tout près de l’hôtel. J’ai dûe annuler faute de gardienne. J’en aurais pris pour mon lot car on avait barré la route avant l’hôtel.
On pourra dire que cet hôtel en a vu de toutes les couleurs durant son existence!

Weeks go by and they seem to be similar in the Santa Cruz County. This morning, in the local newspaper, the news of the day is… a fire, another time! This time, it is not in the forest but it is a blaze that hit an historic inn in the Santa Cruz mountains.
The Brookdale Lodge, which is a hotel, restaurant, spa, and some apartment complex had been hit by a fire yesterday. The front of the hotel, the restaurant as well as the guests rooms have been intact from the fire. The hotel was built in 1890 and many personalities has been strolling since its inauguration such as Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, and former president Herbert Hoover. Throughout the years, the hotel has gone through many owners and in 2007, it was bought by Sanjiv Kakkar for $5.3 millions.
The last time I was in that neighborhood was to enjoy a delicious brunch at the Brookdale Lodge’s restaurant with my husband and kids. The restaurant was unique in a way because it has a creek running through the middle of the restaurant. It is in this creek that one of the former owner’s niece drowned in the 50’s. It is said that her ghost is haunting the Brookdale.
We promised ourselves to bring my parents next time they would be coming for a visit to California. Talking of coincidence, I was supposed to attend a figure drawing session last night, session that was given close by the Brookdale Lodge. I had to cancel because I didn’t have a babysitter. I would have been doom to not go anyway as they were blocking the main road.
All I can say is that hotel has seen it all during its existence!
