Hier, en compagnie d'amis, nous sommes allés faire de la voile jusqu'à Angel Island. C'est une petite île qui faisait office, à l'époque, de centre d'immigration pour tout nouveau venu des pays asiatique (tel que le Japon, la Chine et l'Inde). L'île a subie une restauration en 2005 et récemment, de nouveaux édifices sont maintenant ouvert au grand public.
L'île était connue sous le nom de "Ellis Island of the West", en faisant référence au centre d'immigration sur l'île Ellis de New York au début du siècle. Le principal objectif du centre d'immigration était de retenir des immigrants non-voulu des États-Unis. Malgré la beauté de l'île, les conditions de vie des immigrants à l'époque était éxécrable. Entre 1910 et 1940, les douaniers vérifiaient les papiers et examinaient les immigrants pour les maladies. Les immigrants qui ont le plus souffert sont ceux de la Chine.
Justice est maintenant faite en notre pays et les immigrants sont beaucoup mieux traités, quoique certaines attitudes pourraient être mieux. Je peux prêcher en ma paroisse, ayant moi-même vécu les ribambelles de l'immigration américaine de 1993 jusqu'en mai 2002, où j'ai finalement obtenue ma citoyennete américaine.

Yesterday, along with some friends, we went sailing to Angel Island. It is a small island, off San Francisco, that used to be an immigration center for anybody of Asian origin (Japan, China, and India, for example). The island went into remodeling in 2005 and recently re-opened some buildings to the public.
The island was compared under the name of "Ellis Island of the West", both were immigration stations on an island. The main purpose of the island at the time was to keep unwanted immigrants out of America. In stark contrast of the island's beauty, the immigrants' life conditions were unbearable and unacceptable. Between 1910 and 1940, the staff checked papers and examined immigrants for disease. Chinese were the ones who suffered the most at the time.
Justice is now being done in our country and immigrants are more well treated, while I think some attitudes could use some polishing. I can weight all these words because I am myself an immigrant and have known some roller coaster rides with immigration from 1993 until May 2002, month where I finally obtained my U.S. citizenship.

En 1931, l'armée a bâtit cette machine pour concasser des roches
et les transformer en gravier. Le gravier était ensuite utilisé pour faire
les routes sur l'île. Le tout a été fait après 1930 car auparavant,
l'armâe utlisait des anes et la terre était mieux pour leur sabots. /
In 1931, the army built this rock crusher to sort and crush serpentine rock
from the nearby quarry. The crushed rock was used to pave the roads
on Angel Island. The roads were not paved until the 1930s
because the army was still using mules and dirt was gentler on their hooves.

During la guerre WWI et WWII, le fort McDowell servait d'un entrepôt
pour recruités et plus tard, sa principale mission était comme un entrepôt
outre-mer pour soldats rapatriés ou sur le point d'être envoyé en mission.
Certains soldats demeuraient à l'année au fort, tandis que d'autres
n'étaient la que pour une semaine avant une mission. Pendant leur séjour,
ils étaient nourris et logés, performaient leur régime militaire,
pratiquaient des sports, regardaient des films et se partageaient les tâches
ménagère et cuisinière. /
During WWI and WW II, Fort McDowell served as a Recruit Depot and later
as an overseas Discharge and Replacement Depot. While some soldiers
were stationed at Fort McDowell, others were here for only a week
before being shipped overseas. During their stay, they were housed,
fed, drilled, played sports, watched movies and performed
maintenance and kitchen duties.
