Les escrocs de l’art / Con Artists

Eh bien, les revoilà! Il y a un an, un vol de peintures dans la ville de Pebble Beach s’était déroulé dans la demeure de deux hommes, Dr. Ralph Kennaugh et Angelo Amadio. À l’époque, les journaux s’étaient emparés de la nouvelle comme un petit pain chaud. Les résidents du coin étaient étonnés que des peintures de réputation internationale avaient trouvées refuge dans notre coin de pays.

Voila maintenant que l’avocat des deux hommes qui revient à la charge avec une poursuite judiciaire. Ceux-çi dissent que le sheriff a salit leur réputation en les accusant d’escroquerie.

Pour ceux qui se le demandent, les oeuvres d’art, volés il y a plus d’un an, n’ont toujours pas été retrouvés.

Well, well, here they are again! A year ago, famous artwork were stolen from a Pebble Beach home of two men, Dr. Ralph Kennaugh and Angelo Amadio. At the time, media were all over this breaking news like hot cake. Locals were astonished that such valuable international paintings were part of a California residence.

Now, here are the two men again along with their attorney. They are back with a lawsuit. They said the sheriff office have tarnished their reputation by accusing both men to be the suspect.

For those who wonder, all the stolen artwork a year ago have not been found.

Danser dans les airs / Dance in the air

Pendant que plusieurs lignes aériennes font des coupures d'année en année, on se demande si un jour on devra être debout à tenir une pole pendant des heures pour se rendre à destination.

La ligne aérienne suivante, la Cebu Pacific Air, a le vent dans les voiles. Terminé les présentations ennuyeuse du masque à air et des gilets de sauvetage. Voyez par vous-même avec ce petit vidéo. J'espère qu'ils engagent de beaux mecs également comme hôte de l'air!

While so many airline companies are cutting in their budget year after year, we really wonder if one day we will fly for long hours standing up holding a pole.

This airline company, the Cebu Pacific Air, is all the contrary. Gone are the boring air mask and safety presentation. See by yourself with this small video. I hope they also hire hunks as flight attendants!

Goodbye Mitch & Greg!

Un nouveau mois, une autre fois à dire aurevoir à deux compagnons de travail: Mitch Yanez et Greg Rosen. C’était tout récemment, il y a quelques mois, que j’ai travaillée sur un projet avec Mitch et quelques semaines avec Greg. Ce tout dernier travaillait pour le bureau de Kirkland et ce n’est que depuis les dernières semaines qu’il nous a rejoint en Californie.

Greg est un avide motocycliste qui a gradué de la UC San Diego il y a quelques années. Il a été grandement apprécié de l’équipe de Kirkland et de Mountain View. Nous allons nous ennuyer de son expertise et j’espère que la vie l’emmènera sur la route du succès… au volant de sa rutilante Ducati.

Mitch, avec qui j’ai eue le plaisir de travailler directement, est un jeune homme énergetique qui est un excellent joueur de ping-pong. Grand amateur de baseball, il rêve souvent de voyage, dont l’une de ses destinations favorites: Hawaï. Qui pourrait prouver le contraire? Je vais m’ennuyer de ne pas te voir travailler en faisant faire des pirouettes à ta bouteille d’eau. Mitch, je te souhaite l’emploi de tes rêves: être un analyste-financier!

A new month, another time to say goodbye to two fellow co-workers: Mitch Yanez and Greg Rosen. It was only recently, a few months back, that I worked on a project with Mitch and a few weeks with Greg. The latter one was stationed in the Kirkland’s office and only recently joined us in California.

Greg is an avid motorcyclist who graduated from UC San Diego a few years ago. He has been greatly appreciated both by the Kirkland and Mountain View team. We will greatly miss his expertise and hope life will bring him on the road of the success… behind the handlebar of his Ducatti.

Mitch, with whom I had the pleasure to work directly, is a young energetic fellow who is a fierce ping-pong opponent. A big baseball fan, he often dreams of vacation and one of his favorite places is Hawaii. Who could argue with that? I will miss your water bottle twirling when you work at your desk. Mitch, I wish you will get your dream job: financial analyst!

Dunk Tank

Populaire auprès des fêtes, partys à but non-lucratif et émissions de télévisions (au Québec, pensez “Les Tannants”), la dunk tank est un genre d’une mini-piscine de 4 pieds de hauteur rempli d’eau froide surmontée d’une planche sur laquelle une victime s’y asseoit.

Les participants essaient de lancer une balle sur une cible pour envoyer la victime à l’eau. Le tout est bien drôle. À chaque année, l’école des mes enfants loue une des ces fameuses “dunk tanks” pour le plaisir des petits et des grands.

Une des victimes cette année était nul autre que mon fils adore, André. Voyez qui a réussit à l’envoyer à l’eau. Un vidéo amusant à regarder!

Popular at personal partys, fundraisers and TV shows (in Quebec, think “Les Tannants”), the dunk tank is a kind of mini swimming pool of 4 feet high filled with cold water and with a mini plank suspended over onto the victim will have a seat.

People try their luck to throw a ball onto the target to send the victim in the water. It is really funny. Each year, my children’s school rent one of those dunk tanks for the pleasure of the old and youth ones.

One of the victims this year was my beloved son Andre. See who sent him plunge into the water. An amusing video to watch!

Et c'est un but!!! / It's a goal!!!

Depuis de nombreuses années, mes enfants font partit d'une équipe de soccer. Les co-équipiers changent de saison en saison. Certaines fois, ils font partit d'une équipe plus faible, d'autres fois, c'est le contraire.

Cette année, l'équipe de ma fille Savannah (11-13) sont une forte équipe. C'est une bonne chose pour elle car elle est devenue très motivée. Pendant toutes ces années, mes enfants n'ont jamais compté de but. Pourtant, hier, c'était le jour de chance de Savannah: pour la toute première fois, Savannah a comptée un but par elle-même.

Nous sommes très fier d'elle.

Since many years, my children are part of a soccer team. Teammates change from season to season. Sometimes, they are part of a weak team and other times, it is the contrary.

This year, my daughter Savannah's team (11-13) is really strong. It is a really good inspiration for her because it has motivated her. During all those soccer years, my children have never counted a single goal. However, yesterday, it was Savannah's lucky day: for the very first time, Savannah counted a goal by herself.

We are so proud of her!

Le mystère de la réception / Greeter mystery

Lors de mon récent périple à la Dominican Hospital à Santa Cruz, j’ai été étonnée du grand changement où se trouve l’admission des patients. J’avais rendez-vous à 7h00 au département de radiologie et une enseigne indiquait clairement que la réception ouvrait à 6h45. Bref, personne ne s’y trouvait et c’est après une longue marche dans de multiples corridors que j’ai trouvée la salle de l’admission des patients.

On m’a dit que l’hôpital n’engageait personne à salaire pour faire la réception. Toutes les personnes qui travaillent à la réception sont des bénévoles. Vraiment? Est-ce seulement à la Dominican Hospital? Il paraît que non! Une infirmière m’a dit que tout les hôpitaux américains fonctionnaient sous ce système.

On pense que le système de bénévolat dans les hôpitaux a été instauré pour donner une chance à des jeunes ainsi qu’à des retraites à se sentir utile. Prenez la Dominican Hospital: non seulement les gens peuvent travailler à la réception, mais également au magasin de souvenir, aider les infirmières sur les étages ou faire de la zootheraphie avec les patients.

Je trouve que c’est une belle initiative mais on devrait avoir des bénévoles en tout temps à la réception car il n’y a pas d’heure pour tomber malade et bien se faire accueillir.

While on a recent visit at the Santa Cruz Dominican Hospital, I was really astonished by the remodeling and where I could find the patient admission. I had a 7 AM appt in the radiology department and a posted sign clearly said that someone would be at the reception at 6:45. Well, no one showed up and after a long walk through the extensive hospital hallways, I finally found the patient admission department.

I was told that the hospital didn’t pay for their receptionists and greeters and only volunteers could do such work. Really? Was it only the rule at the Dominican Hospital? It seems it is not. A nurse told me that all the American hospitals work under this similar system.

We think that volunteer work in the hospital was created to give a chance for the youth and recently retired people to feel useful to the society. For example, at the Dominican Hospital: not only people can be receptionist and greeter but they can also work at the gift shop, be working closely on the nursing floors or do pet therapy with patients.

I think it is a great idea; however, I believe there should always be volunteers at the reception area as there are no specific hours to become sick and have someone greet us at the reception.

Les rats sont de retour! / The rats are back!

Il y a beaucoup de plaisir à demeurer dans la campagne: nous avons souvent la paix, les voisins sont loin et nous vivons litérallement dans la nature. Bref, comme toute chose a également ses inconvénients, il y a également l’autre côté de la médaille.

Nous avons depuis bon nombres d’années des poules. Nous aimons avoir des oeufs frais mais avoir cette petite ferme amène également son lot de vermine. Des rats s’infiltrent à souhait dans la cage des poules et mangent toute leur nourriture. Depuis plusieurs mois, je demandais à mon mari de réparer le poulailler et finalement, il s’est décidé.

Maintenant, avec un bon plancher de ciment, il n’y aura plus de rat qui entreront dans le poulailler. La saison des pluies arrive à grand pas et c’est tant pis pour ces locataires indésirable.

Nos poules pourront enfin dormir en paix!

There are lot of advantages to live in the countryside: we often have peace, neighbors are living far away and we literally live within the nature. But, because everything has a bad side, there is another side to the medal.

For the past years, we’ve been having many hens. We love having fresh eggs but to have such little farm brings its load of vermin. Rats have been stealing the chicken food on an industrial scale for the past weeks. A few months ago, I asked my husband to fix the chicken coop and finally, he did it.

Now, with a thick cement floor, there won’t be any more rat coming in the chicken coop. The rainy season is almost here and it is too bad for these unwanted renters.

Our chickens will finally sleep tight!
