Le carême / Lent

C’est aujourd’hui que débute le carême. Pendant plusieurs années, je n’abandonnais rien pour 40 jours puis, pour suivre la tradition familiale, je me suis mise à abandoner une gâterie que j’aimais manger.

Comme je suis vegan maintenant, il n’est plus question d’abandonner le chocolat, les jujubes ou la boîte de Cheez-It. Depuis plus d’un an que je ne mange plus de ces aliments. Donc, cette année, j’ai trichée un peu car j’ai débutée le carême la semaine dernière. Et je m’amuse avec ma nouvelle résolution: celle de complimenter une personne par jour.

Que ce soit une personne non-connue qui a fait une entrevue radio ou TV ou un blogue, je prends le temps d’écrire à un pur étranger chaque jour pour mettre du soleil dans son existence. Si j’aime ma résolution, je continuerai après Pâques. Il y a deux ans, c’est ce que j’ai fait avec l’abandon des Cheez-It.

La pire résolution à tenir que j’ai connue est une femme à mon église qui avait abandonnée le commérage durant 40 jours. Je n’ai pas encore atteint le niveau de sagesse requis pour réussir cet exploit.

It is today that Lent starts. During many years, I was not giving up anything during 40 days but in order to follow family tradition, I started giving up a sweet treat that I was constantly craving for.

Because I am now a vegan, I can give up chocolate, jujuba or Cheez-It. It has been more than a year that I gave up those treats. So, this year, I cheated a bit because I started my “lent” last week. I have so much fun with my new resolution: commit to compliment a person a day.

Whether it is a not well-known personality who did a radio or TV interview or a person having a blog, I am taking the time to write to a stranger everyday and bring sunshine in their life. If I like my resolution, I will continue after Easter. Two years ago, I enjoyed so much my life Cheez-It-free that I gave up that treat forever.

The toughest Lent I’ve heard was a woman at my church who gave up gossiping for 40 days. I think I have not reach a wisdom level to attempt this resolution yet.

Jeannot Lapin à bord du train! / All Aboard with the Easter Bunny!

Pour ceux qui n’ont pas la fibre religieuse et qui désire célébrer Pâques en plein air, rendez-vous dans les montagnes de Santa Cruz pour faire une balade de train à vapeur avec Jeannot Lapin. Les familles peuvent embarquer à bord d’un train qui les amènera dans Bear Mountain pour faire une chasse aux oeufs de Pâques cachés dans la forêt de Redwood.

Plusieurs prix de présences, des kiosques d’art plastique et de jeux seront offert. Il faut noter que s’il pleut, l’évènement aura lieu quand même mais la chasse aux oeufs se déroulera sous une grande tente.

La grande fête de Pâques est organisée par Roaring Camp Railroad à Felton et aura lieu de 11h00 à 14h00. Un coût est prévu pour assister à cette fête.

For those of you who are not very religious and wish to celebrate Easter outside, you have to head toward the Santa Cruz Mountains, in Felton, for a train ride with the Easter Bunny. Families can ride the steam train to Bear Mountain to hunt for chocolate candy eggs hidden in a redwood forest.

Many attendance prizes, crafts and games will be offered. In the event of rain, train cars and the egg hunt will be under cover.

This big Easter celebration is organized by Roaring Camp Railroad in Felton and will be held from 11 to 2 PM. Fees to attend this event is expected.

Mon petit coco / It’s all about eggs & rabbits

Parmis les fêtes religieuses des catholiques, Paques est sûrement la plus joyeuse de toutes les fêtes. C’est le début d’une nouvelle vie, du printemps. C’est aussi une journée où les enfants colorent des oeufs et mangent un peu trop de chocolat.

Les Égyptiens et Perses célébraient le festival du printemps en peignant des oeufs. Pour eux, l’oeuf était considéré comme un symbole de fertilité et d’une nouvelle vie. Saviez –vous que dans les premières années de l’église catholique que les oeufs étaient interdit d’être consommés pendant le carême? D’où vient la tradition de donner des cocos le jour de Pâques. C’est la même chose pour le lapin de Pâques. Dans les légendes de l'Égypte ancienne, le lapin est associé à la lune. Le lapin est relié avec la nuit parce qu'il sort seulement la nuit pour manger. Étant associé à la lune, le lapin est devenu un symbole d'une période de nouvelle vie. Ainsi le lapin a représenté le recommencement de la vie et la fertilité. Et puis, qu’en est-il de la tradition de porter des nouveaux vêtements le dimanche de Pâques? C’est également un symbole pour enlever le vieux et faire place au nouveau dans la vie des gens.

Amongst the Catholic religious holidays, Easter is surely the most joyous of all. It is the beginning of a new life, of Spring. It is also a day where children color eggs and eat a little bit too much chocolate.

The ancient Egyptians and Persians celebrated their spring festivals by coloring and eating eggs. This is because they considered the egg a symbol of fertility and new life. In the early days of the Catholic Church, eggs were forbidden food during Lent. With the ending of Lent, people were so glad to see and eat eggs again that they made it a tradition to eat them on Easter Sunday.

 The Easter hare also was part of the spring celebrations long before Christianity. In the legends of ancient Egypt, the hare is associated with the moon. The hare is linked with the night because it comes out only then to feed. By being associated with the moon, the hare became a symbol of a new period of life. Thus the hare stood for the renewal of life and for fertility. And by the way, what is the deal of wearing brand new clothes on Easter Sunday? This is also a symbol of casting off the old and beginning with the new!

Joyeuses Pâques! / Happy Easter!

Chaque année, c’est la joie pour tous! Que ce soit enfin la fin du carême ou l’arrivée du printemps, la fête de Pâques est surtout connue pour les chocolats et la chasses aux cocos de Pâques.

La Californie n’est pas de reste. Tout le monde dehors et c’est le temps de faire une belle chasse aux oeufs à l’extérieur. Que ce soit dans un jardin, un parc ou même la plage, la Californie regorge d’endroits pour amuser vos petits. Si vous recherchez des évènements plus originaux, vous pouvez aller voir la parade de San Francisco avec des vaches en patins à roulette ou une parade d’oeufs et beurre à Petaluma.
