Last Fall, I answered a call for people to attend a medical conference about cancer in Santa Cruz. I love attending different conferences and I thought I could learn a little more about the subject. The guest of the day was Debra Jarvis.
Because I was scheduled to bring my son to a soccer game the same morning, he came with me at the conference. Debra is a born communicator. She is also a breast cancer survivor. Born in San Jose, she now works as a chaplain in a Washington State Hospital. After going through difficult treatments, she decided to write a book, “It’s Not About the Hair”, that tells her experience to go through cancer. The book is filled with thoughtful sayings and is simply inspiring for anyone going through cancer treatments.
When she came to Santa Cruz, the room was crowded and filled with medical personal, cancer survivors and patients. She gave a simple speech, telling her life and how with humor and good spirits she made it through. To thank the public, there were some door prized, including Jarvis’ book. It was

Rencontrer l’auteure / Meet the author

After a career of 27 years teaching, she can now devote herself to a full-time writer career. So, this Wednesday, she will read a bit of her new mystery book and coffee will be served to the public. Everything is free of charge.

Last week, the company where I work was giving away a charming little book about food, “Food Rules” by Michael Pollan. I thought that a free book meant a boring book. Big error!
The book quickly became number one on the New York Times Bestseller list. It is well-written and can be read quickly. It put the emphasis on processed food that is present in our Western culture and the fact that eating healthy would definitely eliminate several diseases, such as obesity.
It is a book that I really liked and am recommending it to many. I particularly like the chapter where we suggest to imagine going grocery shopping with our great-grandmother and only buy products she would recognize. There is also the fact we should never eat cereals that automatically change the milk’s color. Goodbye Cocoa Puffs!
“Food Rules” is an easy book to go through and we feel, afterward, well informed about a healthy food lifestyle.

Être publié / To be published

Encore en vie / Still going strong
Logos a 40 ans cet automne.

Even though tragedies such as earthquakes or difficult economy hit, there are companies that continue to survive. It is the case of the used books store, Logos.
Logos is 40 years old this Fall. At the time, the owner, John Livingston, thought it was a crazy idea to open such store. Santa Cruz was a ghost town and he would have never thought the store would survive so many years.
He remembers being a few minutes away to celebrate the store’s 20th birthday when the Loma Prieta’s earthquake hit. The store’s north wall collapsed.
Twenty years later, the store is always there with some of the same employees he had since 1989! He has no plan to close the store as Livingston believes there will always be a market for used books.
