Il fallait que je sache donc j’ai demandée. Paraît-il que l’hôpital a deux types de pamphlet pour chaque publication qu’elle offre à ses patients. Un pamphlet pour les moins éduqués (de l’enfant jusqu’à la personne qui a terminée son école secondaire) et un autre pour ceux qui ont fait des études universitaire. On m’a expliqué que les termes médicaux utilisés dans ce dernier pamphlet seraient trop difficile à comprendre pour une personne un peu moins éduqués. Le pire, c’est que l’hôpital où j’étais, m’a dit que la moyenne d’éducation de leur patient était une quatrième année… d’école primaire!
Et moi qui croyait que la plupart des Américains avaient au moins terminés leur école secondaire. J’en ai appris toute une bonne, alors!

Last week, I had to go to the hospital to get a medical procedure that lasted a few hours. As usual, the nurse asked me several questions read off a questionnaire. Questions about my medical past, my age, the reason of my visit and so on… However, a question that got my attention was when she asked my level of education. Really? Why would the hospital want to know that?
I had to know so I asked the nurse. Apparently, the hospital provides two types of pamphlet for each publication they offer to their patient. One is for the less educated (from child level to high school graduate) and the second version for college graduate. I was explained that the medical terminology used in the latter version was too complicated to understand for people of less education. The worst is, at the hospital where I was, they gathered this information over the years and found out that the average education level of their patients is fourth grade… from an elementary school level.
And, for all these years, I believed that the average of American people had at least finished their high school degree. Well, what a surprise!
