On this Thursday, I a presenting you an artist who gave Valentine's Day wishes to millions of strangers on February 14th, and his wife probably didn't object.
Michael Lipman, a longtime Mill Valley resident, was the animator behind the "Google Doodle" du jour — the story of a smitten boy winning a girl's heart. The piece ends with an image of six cartoon couples, including a dog and a cat, a princess and a frog, and two tuxedoed men at their wedding.
The animated clip, which was on Google's homepage for the holiday, took Lipman about 200 hours to produce over about four weeks. Google hired Lipman on the recommendation of Willie Real, a San Francisco illustrator who conceived the Valentine's Day project.
"Boy, when you get a call that says hundreds of millions of people are going to see your work, you heed that call," said Lipman, 52, who goes by the nickname Lippy.
Lipman says he apparently beat out Tony Bennett for the job. Bennett, who is also an accomplished painter, sang the song on the Valentine's Day piece, and asked Google if he could do the art, too, Lipman said.
The Google clip is a major career highlight for Lipman, who studied fine arts and animation at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has also done work for Fantavision, Apple and Mondo Media.
