Quand on entends parler de livres de photos, on pense souvent à des photographies de paysages du style Ansel Adam ou des visages d’étrangers à travers le monde. Pour la photographe de Santa Cruz Jana Marcus, elle s’est interessée aux transexuels.

C’est après avoir exposée ses photos dans les galeries à travers le pays que l’idée de publier un livre lui est venu à l’esprit. Par contre, les maisons d’éditions prêt à investir dans son projet étaient peu nombreux.

“Je suis devenue fatiguée des éditeurs qui refusaient mon projet et ne voulaient prendre aucune chance avec celui-ci, parce que le thème était dérangeant.” Elle s’est tournée vers Kickstarter, un site qui réunit des créateurs (livre, album de musique, film ou autres projets) avec des investisseurs. La chance lui a sourit car elle a reçue plus de $11,000 en investissement.

Son livre, “Transfigurations”, sera publié en mars par et sera mis en vente cet été.

It is after exhibiting her photos in galleries around the country with her compelling portraits of transgenders that the idea of a book came to her mind. However, not too many publishers wished to invest in her project.

“I just got so tired of publishers balking at this project and not being willing to take a chance on it, just because of the subject matter.” She turned her luck to Kickstarter, a site that unite creative people (book, album, movie or other projects) with investors. Luck came to her as she got more than $11,000 in investment.

Her book, “Transfigurations”, will be published in March by a publisher and will be on sale this summer.

Avec un taux de chômage deux fois plus élevé que la moyenne des gens, les transexuelles sont non seulement les rejetés de la société en général mais également ceux à qui ont offrirait le moins de chance d’obtenir un emploi.

C’est avec cette pensée que la compagnie Goodwill Store a ouvert son premier magasin dans le quartier Castro en n’engageant que des personnes qui ont choisi de vivre sous un autre sexe que celui qu’ils avaient à leur naissance. Alexie Scanlon, 38, nouvellement promue comme assistante-gérante déclare: “Si vous êtes née dans un mauvais corps, vous devez apprendre à utiliser ce que vous avez.”

D’après un sondage fait auprès de 650 transexuelles par la Transgender Economic Empowerment Initiative, plus de 70% ont vécus des menaces sur les lieux d’un travail à cause de leur orientation sexuel.

En 2010, il est grand temps d’accepter les gens comme ils sont.

It is with this thought in mind that Goodwill Store opened its very first nationwide store in the Castro district in San Francisco by hiring only people whose genders are different from the ones they had at their birth. Alexie Scanlon, 38, newly promoted assistant manager said: “If you are born in the wrong body, you learn to make use of what you have.”

According to a survey done interviewing 650 transgender adults by the Transgender Economic Empowerment Initiative, more than 70% report having being discriminated against or harassed on the job.

We are in 2010: it is time to accept people as they are!
