Le problème est que les camionneurs doivent se départir de leur camion (qui leur appartient et qui est entièrement payé) pour acquérir par prêt un camion approuvé par la nouvelle loi. Ces camions “clean tech” vaut entre 100K et 200K, donc complètement hors du porte-monnaie de la majorité des camionneurs.
Le but de ce projet environmental est de faire des camionneurs des employés du port de Los Angeles et non être des contracteurs indépendent. Sachant que l’économie est souvent en dent de scie, on craint que les périodes de chômage s’allongent.
Avec le maigre salaire qu’ils amènent à la maison après avoir payer la location du nouveau camion, l’essence, l’assurance-camion et les coûts d’entretien, plusieurs voient cet industrie disparaître.

The American economy often depends on the transportation of the goods consumed by American people. These goods are often brought to destination by truckers. In an effort to have a better air quality in the Los Angeles area, the city launched a new program, “Clean Truck Program” that is meant to be in effect from Seattle to Miami.
The problem is that truckers have to get rid of their old polluting rig (that belonged to them and was fully paid) to acquire a new clean rig approved by the program. These clean tech trucks are valued between 100K and 200K, so completely not affordable for the majority of the truckers out there.
The goal of this environmental project is to make all the truckers related to the Los Angeles port as a port employee and not an independent contractor anymore. Knowing that the economy is often weak, truckers fear they will be unemployed for a long period of time.
With the low salary they bring home after paying the rig lease, gas, insurance and maintenance, many see the industry of trucking (in the clean tech program) disappearing.
