Petite fille courageuse / Courageous little girl

It is by pure coincidence that I found on Facebook, Jessica Joy Reyes, a young lady with the same age than my daughter. Life has been too short for her. Born in 1999, she discovered last year that she had brain tumor. After a chemo and radiation treatment, a second tumor came up in September. On January 5th, she unfortunately lost her battle.

All along her battle, she never gave hope hope. She even created a non-profit organization, NEGU, to help kids fighting cancer to not give up. I was really touched by everything I read regarding Jessica. I hope you will also be as inspired as I have been.

Hommage à Joel Verutti / Joel Verutti’s Blog Dedication

----------------------------------

Last week, I have to admit that it wasn’t really my week. Besides my ongoing health problems of the past months, my sport car gave up in the middle of an intersection in Santa Cruz. But the event that morally affected me the most was when I found out Thursday night that Joel Verutti died.

About a year ago, I found out he had an incurable cancer. Also a parent in my children’s classroom (he has a daughter of the same age than mine), I became really sensitive to his case due to the nature of my health problems. Doctors have told him he would live until June 2010 but he beat the odds with his joy of living to pursue his life until last February 5th.

Grand sport fan, he practiced sailing during his spare time. He loved bringing his daughter Josselyn with whom he was really close. This sport gave him the opportunity to meet his wife Tina 28 years ago. Joel always worked in the construction industry but because of the actual economy, he lost his job in May 2009. It was a few months later that he started having terrible headaches and consulted a doctor who later, diagnosed a malignant gliobastoma brain tumor. Thirteen months later, he lost his battle and passed away at the age of 56.

A funeral gathering will be celebrated on March 12th in Santa Cruz. To his request, his ashes will be spread at Huntington Lake later this summer. My sympathy to his family but especially to his wife Tina and daughter Josselyn.

Austin Bernard loved to play outside with his friends. He was a very normal 12-years old boy until last July, when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After months of radiation and chemotherapy, he is still pursuing treatments even though the tumor is completely gone.

The worst for anyone who has cancer in the USA is that it is rare that all the medical bills are completely covered, even when you have the best health insurance possible. It is the case for Austin’s mom, who has to spend 20% of the total expense as an out-of-pocket bills for the care of her son.

In order to help this family in need, a friend organized today a special festival in honor of Austin, the Austin-Fest. The event will be happening from 3 to 9 PM at the Felton Community Hall (information at 831-336-8258) and cost $10 for 6 hours of music and a silent auction.
