Écrire pour le plaisir... / Writing for pleasure...

In our modern time, communications is often resume to emails, Facebook, Twitter or any other social networking ways. We often forget the pleasure of a handwritten letter.

Dean Bowman, a third-grade elementary teacher at Twin Lakes in Aptos created a nice writing program for his 12 students. He encourages them to write one letter a day to different people and companies. Overall, he got more than 240 responses. His students loves this new activity and they are excited to check the mailbox everyday to see if they got a letter back.

One of these students is Brian Hanover, 9, who received more than 55 answers to his letters. Some had even more than a letter in the envelope, such as a Dodgers' t-shirt, for example.

A neat initiative, which, I hope, will spread throughout other schools...

Petite bouteille va loin… / Small bottle goes a long way…

A small bottle thrown two years ago from the Santa Cruz Harbor by Miranda Whipp went farther than coming back on the beach nearby. The bottle made it all the way to Thailand where a Nepalese teacher, Thomas Schmottlach, was on vacation and found it while diving off the shores.

A friendship was born between the two of them despite their age difference and culture. It reminds me when I was 15 years old, while vacationing in Old Orchard Beach, in Maine, I had thrown a bottle but it didn’t go very far. Despite all, two weeks upon my return, a young girl of my age and who was living 3 hours from my house, wrote to me and said that she had found the bottle on the beach! We pursued our friendship during a few years and then I lost touch with her.

Oh well, I can tell you that I understand how the little Miranda feels with her new friend.
